unit 8

Due Monday:  327-335
Due Tuesday 11/17:  335-342 (stop at physiology of obesity) and print advertisement (one that you find striking - this is worth 10 points)
Due Wednesday 11/18:  342-348
Due Friday 11/20:  348-54
Due Monday 11/23:  354-62 - and bizarre food bazaar!  --> Bring an unusual food to class--enough for at least half the class to each try a small amount--along with an appropriate serving utensil (I will provide paper plates, napkins and plastic flatware).  Ideally, don't bring anything that needs to be heated or refrigerated.  Please write up a short (one paragraph) explanation of your item - what it is and why you chose it.  (In other words, it should have some meaning to you and not be indiscriminately plucked off a supermarket shelf.  Choose wisely!).  Make at least one reference to a term or concept from the reading in your write-up.  Please type.  This is worth 20 total points for term 2.

Due Tuesday 11/22:  366-372 (including the section on lie detection)
Due Monday 11/30:  372-89 (try to divide this up - it compensates for not having anything due Wed. before Thanksgiving)
Due Tuesday 12/1:  389-96
Due Wednesday 12/2:  397-406
Unit 8 test is Friday 12/4

Also, here are the links to the readings from class today (Monday 11/16):

Remember that any day reading is due brings the possibility of a reading quiz.  You may always use your own original notes to assist you on any reading quiz.

Also, I did not get naturalistic observation write-ups from everyone.  The assignment description clearly said that each individual (even when working in a pair) was responsible for his/her own write-up.  If you did not give me one, please do so A.S.A.P.

units 1 and 2 assignments

As mentioned in class, your naturalistic observation is due in class Tuesday 9/22.  Click on the link to the assignment to read the requirements - I will not be giving this out in hard copy.

As indicated on the syllabus, your final unit test on units 1 and 2 will be Friday 9/25.

for next week

To begin reviewing for the AP exam, please do the following for Monday (worth 10 points for 4th quarter):

Create an original free response question that incorporates terms from five or more different units. Also include a scoring key (like the actual AP free response question you looked at on schizophrenia, which gave examples of what types of responses score and what types did not) or model answer of how the terms could be used.  Please type and have ready to redistribute in class on Monday (D block) or Tuesday (B block).  You will be exchanging, answering and scoring these prompts in class.

be sure to read all of unit 9

I may have left off some pages in the assignments in the previous post, but I think you know that we're reading the whole book and you're responsible for the entirety of each unit.  I'm sure that those of you who noticed already made this adjustment (good for you!) but this is just to be clear about the expectation.

unit 9 reading and baby book assignments

Here is the baby book assignment - due in class on Monday 3/9.   Make a point to at least read through this this week so you know what you need to do.  Again, it should be a fun assignment if you pace yourself.

due after break

The only homework you have over break is one reading assignment - p. 411-417 (unit 9) due Monday after break.  You'll be reading that unit the week after break, so if you have time and want to get ahead, definitely feel free. You'll have a project with this unit (to create a baby book, a timeline of your very own development), so getting ahead would be beneficial.

If you're looking to do some extra credit, you can earn up to 10 extra points by doing this assignment. I originally gave this as a required assignment, so you can disregard the 20 point value attached to it. Everything else, though, including the grading criteria, is the same.  This is optional but is also due Monday after break, mostly so you'll have it done, if you plan to do it, and can focus on unit 9.

important update on unit 4

As I told you all last week (and in the last post) our room to make any modifications due to the snow is very limited at this point.  So, in order to stay on track and wrap up with unit 4 before vacation, we're sticking to our original schedule for unit 4, with one small modification (see below).

D block, since we don't meet Wednesday, Thursday will be our last S & P class and your test will be Friday.

B block, you don't have class on Friday, so your test is still Thursday. Unlike D block, you do have class on Wednesday, so that'll be your last S & P class.  That's the best arrangement I can make given the circumstances (this weather is unexpectedly ridiculous).

Though we won't have as much class time for this unit as I would've liked, the upside is that you're all gaining time (from not being in school all day), which should make reading and reviewing a little easier.  I've been using some of that extra time to catch up on grading, so I'll have a few things to give back to you next time we meet.

unit 4 reading

Despite any more snow that Mother Nature may send our way, we are pressing on as scheduled.  The AP exam is May 5th and it isn't moving, so we can't continue to push back our class deadlines.

If you're without a book, you can find the pages digitally here:  115-124, 125-133, 134-140.  (These are large files, so you'll need to download them, and be patient).
Also, there are five subscriptions to an online version of the textbook that Mr. Sandler gave out to his classes, and I've heard they've been shared widely via Facebook.  If you ask around, I'm sure you'll be able to get access to one.

Throughout the snowy season, plan on leaving your Myers book at home, as I asked you to do at the beginning of the year anyway.  (If you want to get reading done at school, you can borrow a copy from me or from the media center).

B block:
115-124 for Monday 2/2
124-133 for Tuesday 2/3
133-140 for Thursday 2/5
141-150 for Friday 2/6
151-159 for Monday 2/9
159-169 for Tuesday 2/10
S&P test is Thursday 2/12

D block:
115-124 for Tuesday 2/3
124-133 for Wednesday 2/4
133-140 for Thursday 2/5
141-150 for Friday 2/6
151-159 for Monday 2/9
159-169 for Tuesday 2/10
S&P test is Thursday 2/12

unit 11 test update

Unit 11 test is moved to Friday so that we can have Thursday for recap and review.

D block, check out the links in the last post about the Australian, American-Australian and Chitling intelligence tests, since we won't have a chance to do those in class.

Otherwise, be sure to use your *visual-spatial* and *creative* intelligences to build some snowmen (not required, just a suggestion).

Thursday, January 22, 2015

Friday's class

I won't be in school Friday.  Please keep up with your reading, and familiarize yourselves with the intelligence tests below:

B block:  Pick up the following intelligence tests in paper copy, or check them out online:
Original Australian Intelligence Test,  American/Australian Intelligence Test, Chitling Intelligence Test.  Each of these tests provides a link to answers at the bottom of its webpage - click on "go to scoring sheet."  You can also check your answers to yesterday's tests here.

D block:  Pick up the Remote Associations test, World War I intelligence test, and the Mensa workout.  You can check your answers here.  The Mensa workout is also available online here.

Unit 11 reading

We're going to move through unit 11 fairly quickly; however, this should be manageable because there's a good amount that you'll find is familiar (as with sleep and drugs in the consciousness chapter), as well as a lot of extending of concepts you've already learned (e.g. heritability, twins studies, cultural differences).

B block:
Due Wednesday 1/21:  523-532
Due Thursday 1/22:  532-539
Due Friday 1/23:  539-548
Due Monday 1/26:  548-556

D block:
Due Wednesday 1/21:  523-532
Due Friday 1/23:  532-544 (try to split this over the two nights you have)
Due Monday 1/25:  544-556 (again, more than I'd give you ideally, but you will find the note above especially true for these sections.  Pay special attention to the last few pages on test bias - that's new and of particular importance).

midyear review practice test

Here's the test that I gave out (part of) in hard copy, and here is the answer key and free response scoring rubrics.

Wednesday, January 7, 2015

unit 5 due dates

Note that we're moving rather quickly through this unit, but much of it is information I suspect you've learned before in other classes (the effects of drugs) or just reaffirms what you already know (about sleep especially).  In other words, it should be manageable.

B block:
175-181 for Thursday 1/8
181-192 for Friday 1/9
192-201 for Monday 1/12
201-210 for Wednesday 1/14
Midyear exam (including questions from unit 5) is Friday 1/16 (note the change).  The exam will be the usual format:  35 multiple choice questions and a free response prompt that uses 6 terms.

D block:
175-181 for Thursday 1/8
181-192 for Friday 1/9
192-201 for Tuesday 1/13
201-210 for Wednesday 1/14
Midyear exam (including questions from unit 5) is Friday 1/16 (note the change).  The exam will be the usual format:  35 multiple choice questions and a free response prompt that uses 6 terms.
