Over break: Starting 12/26, start keeping track of:
-how many hours of sleep you get -your caffeine intake
-your energy level and mood at three points during the day:
--when you wake up
--in the mid-afternoon
--at night

Your energy level should be tabulated as a number between 1 (little energy) and 10 (highly energetic) Likewise, track your mood using a number between 1 (awful mood) and 10 (fantastic mood). Please note any unusual circumstances that might affect your sleep, caffeine intake, energy level, or mood. How you choose to keep track of your data is up to you. Keep in mind that you will be doing some analysis of this data, so it should be organized in a sensible way. I will be looking for your data from Dec. 26 through Jan. 2, so don't skip a day.

Due by Friday after break and worth 5 points on your last test:

Go to http://www.authentichappiness.sas.upenn.edu/Default.aspx, register and choose either two shorter tests (10 questions or less) or one longer test (20 or more questions), and write a short summary and analysis. Either print out your results or include them in your write-up. Also comment on how accurate you found your results and whether you think this test has value. Length should be about 1 typed, double spaced page in 12 point font. Please choose a test other than the Via Strengths test (longer version), since we'll be doing that one later this year.

Extra credit:  due by Monday 12/9:
For 5 points of extra credit (perhaps more, if you submit something really spectacular), create an activity based around the motivation, emotion and stress unit (unit 8).  This does not need to take the form of a period-long lesson, but does need to be an interactive activity that uses the content in a creative way.  Since we have the bold terms pretty much covered, I'm looking for something that works with the other content in the chapter, i.e. the research studies cited and other more general concepts.  Your activity needs to include all necessary directions and materials necessary to run the activity.  Please submit them to me both in hard copy and electronically (so I can make edits if I want).

AP free response questions and answer keys

Here are the scoring rubrics and/or model answers for the free response questions on the quiz you took Thursday for D block and G block (the answer key for the question about Zoey buying a car starts on page 6 - I edited out some of the terms and replaced them with the following:  Prosocial behavior could include choosing a hybrid car because it's good for the environment.  Prosocial does not have to do with simply interacting with others, so this example needed to include something about a positive contribution to the world or a socially responsible behavior or decision.  Evolutionary psychology needed to include something about Zoe wanting to behave in a way that ensured her survival and therefore her ability to reproduce, e.g. choosing a larger car that was large and therefore safe).

**As a reminder, I'm going to give you a timed free response question in class one day this week that will count as a quiz grade for term 4.

sleep project part 2 and unit 11 due dates

Your sleep project is due next Tuesday 1/29 (note the change from Monday).  The specifics are listed below.

Here are your due dates for unit 11.  Please remember to bring your own original notes to class - a homework quiz this unit is very likely:
p. 523-531 for Thursday 1/24
p. 532-539 for Friday 1/25 (G block - you can do this for Monday 1/28 if you need to)
Your sleep project is due Tuesday 1/29 - see below
p. 539-548 for Wednesday 1/30
p. 548-556 for Thursday 1/31
the test date for this unit is Tuesday 2/5 (you won't have a project, but will likely have a smaller assignments, like the personality test analysis assignment)

Here are guidelines for part 2 of the sleep project.  I'll be looking for a 2 page (typed, double-spaced) well-organized narrative write-up for this that includes the following:
  1. Compare your vacation ("control" week) sleep schedule to your schedule the first week back from break, noting any trends you see. Consider the following in your response:
·         What did you learn about your sleep patterns (and related behaviors) how they affect you?
·         What changes could you make to your sleep schedule to improve it? How realistic is it to expect you’ll be able to implement these changes?
·         Overall, what value does this project (and this unit) have for you?  Would you say this helped you to understand your own sleep-related behaviors more, or did it just reinforce what you already knew?  Explain.
  1. Make an attempt to interpret one or more of dreams/dream fragments using at least 2 different dream theories.  If you don’t remember any dreams, you may include 2 additional terms from previous units instead (see #3 below).
  2. Include and clearly, correctly apply 3 terms from the chapter and be thoughtful about which terms you use.  You’re welcome to use the obvious ones (like “sleep” or “dream”) as long as it’s very clear you understand the book definitions of the term and don’t just throw them around generally, but choose 3 others in addition to these and in addition to the dream theories you selected.

Grading will be based on:
_____ / 10 Neatness and completeness of sleep chart
_____ / 10 Clarity of organization and fluidity of writing
_____ / 10 Thoughtfulness of analysis and responses to the prompts
_____ / 10 Clear and thoughtful application of terms

_____ / 40
