unit 5 reading and project

Since you'll be reading this chapter next week and I wanted to make the assignments reasonable (no more than 10 pages each), they might not be divided up as nicely as usual.  Please read to the end of the section on the last page assigned (see notes below).

B block:
Due Monday 1/13: p. 175-185 (read to the end of "sleep theories" section)
Due Tuesday 1/14:  p. 185-192
Due Thursday 1/16:  p. 192-201 (read to the end of the section on opiates)
Due Friday 1/17:  p. 201-210

Due Monday 1/13: p. 175-185 (read to the end of "sleep theories" section)
Due Tuesday 1/14:  p. 185-192
Due Wednesday 1/15:  p. 192-201 (read to the end of the section on opiates)
Due Thursday 1/16:  p. 201-210

Since your midterm is Tuesday 1/21 and you'll be reading the states of consciousness chapter next week, your sleep infographic project won't be due until Wednesday 1/22.  Here are the more specific requirements.

A few reminders...

Welcome back from our extended vacation!  Here are a few notes and reminders as we get back into the swing of things:

  1. Your unit 10 test on personality is Thursday 1/9.  This will still give us enough time to go over the key points from the chapter in class.  It will mean we won't be doing a project for this unit, but you'll very likely be doing a personality-based assignment in May when we have some time after the AP exam.
  2. Extra credit that was originally due Friday 1/3 can be handed in any time before the end of this week (Friday 1/10).
  3. Please keep tracking your sleep!  The requirements for this sleep project are listed in the previous post.

Over break: Starting 12/26, start keeping track of:
-how many hours of sleep you get -your caffeine intake
-your energy level and mood at three points during the day:
--when you wake up
--in the mid-afternoon
--at night

Your energy level should be tabulated as a number between 1 (little energy) and 10 (highly energetic) Likewise, track your mood using a number between 1 (awful mood) and 10 (fantastic mood). Please note any unusual circumstances that might affect your sleep, caffeine intake, energy level, or mood. How you choose to keep track of your data is up to you. Keep in mind that you will be doing some analysis of this data, so it should be organized in a sensible way. I will be looking for your data from Dec. 26 through Jan. 2, so don't skip a day.

Due by Friday after break and worth 5 points on your last test:

Go to http://www.authentichappiness.sas.upenn.edu/Default.aspx, register and choose either two shorter tests (10 questions or less) or one longer test (20 or more questions), and write a short summary and analysis. Either print out your results or include them in your write-up. Also comment on how accurate you found your results and whether you think this test has value. Length should be about 1 typed, double spaced page in 12 point font. Please choose a test other than the Via Strengths test (longer version), since we'll be doing that one later this year.

Extra credit:  due by Monday 12/9:
For 5 points of extra credit (perhaps more, if you submit something really spectacular), create an activity based around the motivation, emotion and stress unit (unit 8).  This does not need to take the form of a period-long lesson, but does need to be an interactive activity that uses the content in a creative way.  Since we have the bold terms pretty much covered, I'm looking for something that works with the other content in the chapter, i.e. the research studies cited and other more general concepts.  Your activity needs to include all necessary directions and materials necessary to run the activity.  Please submit them to me both in hard copy and electronically (so I can make edits if I want).

due the week of 11/12-11/15

Please read to the end of unit 7B for Tuesday.  You also have these assignments due next week (Tuesday for the project proposal and either Thursday or Friday for the Blink response, depending on your class).
